I learned my trade at the Welsh School of Violin Making, then returned to Scotland when the time came to set up my own workshop. That was in 1980. For much of this twenty-odd year period, I've made instruments based on classical Italian models. I've recently become interested in five-stringed violins. A traditional musician asked me for a violin and a viola to take on tour, and I thought a five-string would be a good way to avoid having to carry two instruments. Although conventional instruments will always be my main concern, I enjoy trying unusual things, and occasionally pushing theboundaries a bit.
